CAR president arrives in Libreville for summit on crisis

President of the Central African Republic (CAR) Francois Bozize arrived in Libreville, capital of Gabon, on Thursday afternoon to attend the Summit of Heads of State of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) on the politico-military crisis that threatens to topple his regime, it was learned from diplomatic sources Thursday in Libreville.

The presidents of the countries in the sub-region Denis Sassou Nguesso (Republic of Congo), Idriss Deby (Chad), Teodoro Obiang Nguema (Equatorial Guinea), are already in Libreville.

According to the source, Cameroon will be represented by deputy prime minister, while Burundi by its foreign minister and Sao Tome and Principe by the minister of defense.

In an interview to the press on Thursday morning, opposition politician Jean-Jacques Demafouth said the rebellion Seleka, the unarmed opposition, civil society and the CAR government are on the verge of reaching a political consensus which maintain the CAR president Bozize in office until the end of his term in 2016.

President Bozize would have to establish a national unity government to prepare for credible elections after his tenure, according to Demafouth.

On Wednesday, the talks among the parties were deadlocked because of the intransigence of the rebellion and the opposition who demanded the resignation of President Bozize and his transfer to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes allegedly committed by his regime.
